Police in Maryland take aim at underage drinking and driving

Police in one Maryland city recently spent some time outside a restaurant that seems to be popular with people under the age of 21 -- especially on "Wine Night," which is on Mondays. The goal was to stop people from drinking and driving. Officers issued several citations during that time, and five people were even arrested for DUI.

Police dressed in plain clothes joined forces with someone from the Maryland Department of Liquor control after several complaints were received concerning assaults, DUIs and underage drinking. It was not only the patrons who were being observed, however. The restaurant was also under scrutiny that night.

Clyde's-Tower Oaks Lodge in Rockville is now under suspicion of selling alcohol to minors and for serving at least one person beyond what is practical. That person could not walk on her own and supposedly had a blood alcohol level of .23 when tested. Citations were written to underage patrons accused of having fake identification. Others were cited for being under 21 and in possession of alcohol.

The ages of the five people who were arrested for drinking and driving were not given, so it is unclear whether some or all of them were underage. Regardless, those individuals could end up defending themselves against a DUI charge. If that happens, prosecutors will be responsible for proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and the individuals will be given the opportunity to refute the charges or follow some other course of action based upon their individual circumstances, depending on what is believed to provide the best resolution to the charges possible.
